On this Highways Environmental Advisor apprenticeship programme you will learn a range of skills across the Highways Business focussing on the environmental enabling function supporting the highways engineer design teams.

What is an Environmental Advisor?

Environment Advisors ensure that construction projects comply with environmental regulations and targets.

The role consists of:

  • Addressing many issues including air quality, land and water contamination, waste management, and environmental impact
  • Ensuring regulations are complied with
  • Liaising with site teams, clients, stakeholders and the wider environmental team
  • Managing legislative issues for clients, including planning permissions and consents Conducting field surveys to establish a baseline for levels of pollutions or contamination for a site
  • Interpreting data
  • Keeping up to date with the most recent changes in environmental law
  • Identifying and consider potential contaminant sources
  • Writing reports for stakeholders and other team members
  • Communicating with clients
  • Researching previous investigations of a site, providing information for clients considering purchase
  • Undertaking field work to identify any previous activity on the site and any possible contamination
  • Creating site waste management plans
  • Ensuring that any biodiversity recommendations are met on site
  • Environmental Advisors typically work 40 hours per week

As an Apprentice Highways Environmental Advisor what will I be doing?

There will be a rotational work programme to gain experience of numerous different aspects of the particular Highways business you are placed with, predominantly within the Environmental Assessment Discipline. This will include: ·

  • Environment Discipline
  • Ecological Discipline
  • Arboricultural Discipline
  • Design Team

In addition to the formal training programme you will receive hands on experience including mentoring and coaching from experienced members of the environment team based out of the Mansfield Office.

Following the apprenticeship programme we would expect you to have developed skills in:

  • Working independently using your own initiative
  • Principles of Environmental Impact Assessment associated with Highways schemes
  • Broad environmental knowledge of environment: including air, water, noise, cultural heritage, landscape, resource efficiency and nature conservation
  • GIS Exposure (Geographic Information Systems)
  • Understand safe working practices and Health and Safety regulations within the work environment Experience of undertaking desk studies and site surveys taking non-statutory EIA’s from design through to construction
  • Liaison with design engineers, specialists, contractors and the client
  • Liaison with outside organisations such as Wildlife Trusts, Environmental Health Officers, Natural England, Heritage England, Environment Agency, Lead Local Flood Authorities ·
  • Commercial understanding

This is very much the start of an exciting career in the construction industry with wide ranging prospects which may span a number of roles.

The initial stages of the programme will provide the essential grounding and understanding of what is a challenging environment. As the programme progresses, depending on the role you choose to pursue, you may progress to a professionally recognised qualification providing the foundations for a career which can lead to the management of site teams.

Options include engineering, quantity surveying, site management, planning, buying, estimating, designing and many more.

Kier is committed to the long term development of their staff. The Quantity Surveyor programme is very much the start, apprentices who display the required abilities and attitude will become permanent employees.

This role may involve some travelling, specifically in order to attend the training facility to undertake your academic training, as such a driving licence would be beneficial. This apprenticeship may involve working weekends and may involve working in the evenings. A career in construction may involve being based on projects in various locations.
