A great opportunity to develop your career, gain hands on experience whilst studying towards a recognised qualification. You will be working and training as a Paralegal Apprentice in our busy Family team supporting Partners, Fee Earners and Secretaries. You will need to have a flexible approach and the ability to work within a team environment.

Detailed Job Description

Initial training will be in the workings of a legal office and the general principles of English law. You will then concentrate on the work carried out within the family team. This will include, but will not be limited to, the main responsibilities below and you will be provided with full training to learn and develop in the role.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Team Admin Tasks
  • New client enquiries & opening file procedures
  • Closing files – e.g. returning original documents to client and storage of deeds etc.
  • Sending files to temporary storage
  • Preparing letters & correspondence to clients and other side
  • Liaising with clients over the phone e.g. chasing documents/information, booking appointments, requesting updates etc.
  • Filing to ensure files are maintained & up to date
  • Assisting in the printing & dispatching of bills to clients
  • Booking/organising team meetings, webinars & team social events
  • Chasing the court - chasing orders/ applications. Diarising to follow up.
  • To ensure the confidentiality and security of the firm’s and client documentation and information
  • To undertake any specific training when required to do so.

Financial Management Tasks

  • Chasing payment of bills after 10 days
  • Ensuring that clients are aware of the different method of payments.
  • Liaising with each fee earner with regards to their respective clients and any issues that you should be aware of prior to calling.
  • Negotiating payment plans with clients
  • Suggesting repayment plans to client where appropriate & liaising with our Debt Recovery Manager, Financial Director and accounts team.
  • Breakdown of client invoices and payments
  • Resolving client queries in respect of invoices/payments.
  • When requested, providing clients with a breakdown of their invoices and payments.

Client Work

  • Court forms & applications – e.g. Form E, child arrangement applications, statement of information applications & other applications.
  • Bundle Preparation - compiling trial bundles and bundles for counsel & court.
  • Preparing financial summaries
  • Drafting documents – e.g. pre/post nuptial agreements

The ideal candidate will have the confidence to deal with various individuals and groups. You will be supported to undertake recognised qualifications whilst gaining invaluable on-the-job experience.

You will need to be a team player, reliable, adaptable, conscientious, and able to work to instructions.

Requirements and Prospects

Qualifications required

Essential:

  • GCSE grades A to C or equivalent are essential, specifically Maths and English.
  • 3 A Levels grade C or above.

Desirable:

  • Degree (non-Law)
  • Previous experience within a Legal environment

  • Ability to work within the physical nature of the job
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word

CILEx Law School has strong employer links within this industry sector and following on from successful completion of this apprenticeship there may be the opportunity for progression onto Chartered Legal Executive training.

Training provided

  • Job-specific training through working alongside experienced staff
  • A competency based units to demonstrate you have the skills required to carry out the job. These are assessed by breaking down the contents of the jobs within your specific occupation into tasks called units of competences and will be measured through observations, assessments and witness testimony.
  • A technical qualification that includes theoretical knowledge required in an occupation and underpins the knowledge required for the competencies.
  • Functional Skills (Literacy, Numeracy) Dependent on your prior attainment you may need to be assessed in a literacy and numeracy skills which are an integral part of your apprenticeship. Upon successful completion you will be awarded additional certificates of recognition.

If you will be required to commute, then please carefully consider the cost and time involved before applying for the role. This is a monthly paid post and you are required to work a month in hand and you will be entitled to receive statutory minimum annual leave. The salary will be £16,500 per annum. You are responsible for funding your own travel to and from your place of work. You must conduct yourself in a safe and diligent manner and comply with health and safety policies and procedures. You must uphold and promote the company policies and procedures, promoting those specifically to your area of work, including Equality and Diversity and Safeguarding.
