Description
University of London is inviting applications for a Financial Accountant Apprentice. As part of an essential support team, you will be assisting the Group Accountant with year-end and month-end tasks. After 12-18 months the opportunity to gain experience in other parts of Finance will be facilitated, options include Performance Reporting, Treasury and Transactional teams. This is a great opportunity to get exposure to a variety of accounting tasks and responsibilities.
Duties and responsibilities:
Financial Accounting-
- Assisting with the production of the annual consolidated and individual statutory accounts of the University, the Unified Trust Fund and the trading subsidiaries to the applicable HEFCE SORP, Charity SORP and UK GAAP standards.
- To assist with the integrity of the monthly TBs and Balance Sheets. In particular: Assist in the preparation of balance sheet reconciliations, investigating and resolving differences.
- Ensure fixed assets, acquisitions and trading stock are properly accounted for.
- To ensure that intercompany accounts are properly maintained and reconciled.
- To ensure that control and suspense accounts are properly maintained and reconciled.
- Entering journals into the general ledger as required.
- Ensure that ad-hoc journals as required by Financial Services and Treasury e.g. moving bank transactions to control accounts, grant receipts etc. are posted in a timely manner.
- Provide support to Group Accountant to provide an effective co-ordinated month end closing activities across Financial Accounting and to ensure an efficient year end is completed on time.
Audit-
- Assist the Group Accountant with the external audit including liaison with the external auditors and managing the preparation and collation of information requests.
- Assist with internal and external auditors for Financial Accounting transactions.
Investment and Trust Management-
- Assisting with the daily accounting and regular reporting for the individual Trusts and the Unified Trust Fund.
- Ensure that journals relating to Endowment transactions e.g. distributions, fee payments, drawdowns, donations etc. are posted in a timely manner.
Other duties-
- To provide cover for the other team members.
- As directed by either the Group Accountant, to ensure that procedural manuals and guidance for all processes are regularly reviewed, updated and communicated.
- Through regularly liaison with departments and colleagues in Finance to proactively look to continuously improve the experience of interacting with the team and efficiency of processes.
- To ensure that there is regular communication to all stakeholders on relevant developments in the Financial Accounting areas and arrange for necessary training to be provided.
- Assisting with various projects across Finance and the implementation of new processes and system changes.
- Leading by example, ensure that the University’s Financial Regulations are followed and that there are sufficient checks and balances to identify, mediate and prevent future breaches of the Financial Regulations.
- To actively follow and promote the University of London policies, including the University's Dignity at Work and Equal Opportunities Policy and actively promote these wherever possible.
- To maintain an awareness and observation of fire and health and safety regulations.
- Any other duties consistent with both the grade and scope of the post.
- Any other duties reasonably required of the post holder by the reporting manager.

ACA is a great option if you're looking to become a chartered accountant and work in accountancy and finance. It opens a wealth of opportunities, as you can specialise in specific areas or sectors, or work broadly across multiple industries. It consists of three levels:
Certificate Level: You’ll be introduced to the essentials of accountancy, finance, and businesses. You’ll learn about double-entry accounting, assurance, business and technology, law, management, and taxation.
Professional Level: This level teaches you how to apply technical knowledge to real-life scenarios. You’ll deepen your knowledge on financial reporting, audit and assurance, tax compliance, finance management, business strategy, and business planning.
Advanced Level: You will give you the skills to understand how accountancy and finance works within businesses. You’ll learn about corporate reporting and strategic business management.
You will also be required to complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), which will include a case study exam and project report.
As part of the apprenticeship you will complete innovative skills and behaviours that are essential to complement the vital technical training. They are designed to support learners in developing essential competencies and embedding their learning within the context of their organisation. Delivered with motivation and engagement at heart, learners can practice these essential competencies with industry peers in a realistic environment.
Training will be provided by attending either face-to-face classroom based lessons or Live Online. An apprenticeship has to be relevant to the job you are undertaking and you must dedicate time to off the job training, as well as completing knowledge, skills and behaviors associated with your apprenticeship.

Take on any typical newly qualified accountant role such as assistant Financial Accountant or Management Accountant.
Please note this role is Hybrid with 2 days in the office per week and 3 working from home.
30 days annual leave plus closure days over Christmas and Easter.
Accessible via public transport and in close proximity of London Euston and Kings Cross stations as well as Russell Square and Tottenham Court Road tube stations.
