Hello, I Am Lucy F

I knew that I did not want to take the university route because I wanted to gain practical experience. The idea of being able to learn in a large and reputable company really appealed to me, so I decided that an apprenticeship was the best route to do this. Furthermore, certain apprenticeships allow you to rotate through different departments and placements, thus providing you with a wider insight into company operations and different career paths. The opportunity to gain a broad range of professional experience was of high priority for me.

Tell us more about your experience

Currently I am based in the Corporate Communications department for BMW Group’s Plants Oxford and Swindon. My daily responsibilities include writing and publishing internal communications via email, our internal intranet and app. I also support external communications such as the planning and execution of photoshoots and press releases.

Although I have only been on my apprenticeship for a couple of months, I have had so many incredible opportunities. One highlight is planning, developing and filming the Plant's Christmas video, which went out to over 4000 associates.

As my career only began recently, perhaps the greatest challenge has been adapting to my new role and becoming familiar with the company’s structure and operations. The corporate environment was an unfamiliar and brand-new experience for me.

"It is an exciting experience to be part of a dynamic company and my department helped me to settle in quickly."

I have lots of support around me not only from my line manager, but also from the rest of my department. They have guided me with projects and readily answered any queries that I have had. I also have close support from my college in the form of 1:1s with my module leaders.

Having only commenced my apprenticeship recently, I have not had the opportunity to discuss what will happen upon completion.

There are many different apprenticeships in a plethora of fields, so there is likely to be one that suits your interests. However, this can take a lot of searching so do not be discouraged if you don’t find something immediately. If you can, I would recommend looking early in the year, as some vacancies close earlier than expected.
