Hello, I Am Toby

I decided to do an apprenticeship in the RAF as it allowed me to gain all my licenses free of charge and all whilst getting lots of hands-on experience whilst getting paid. Another reason was that the other academic routes I could've taken didn't appeal to me as I am a more practical learner, which is what an apprenticeship provides.

Tell us more about your experience

What are your interests outside of work?

Outside of work I enjoy being outdoors walking, climbing and camping. I also enjoy going to the football.

Can you describe your job and what you do on a day-to-day basis?

My day-to-day job varies massively. I conduct tasks such as transporting personnel to a large number of locations ensuring they get to their destinations on time. I also transport freight up and down the country on a regular basis delivering a wide range of loads. I could also be refueling typhoon jets on base aiding the country's defense. No two days are the same.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

The highlight of my career so far was being involved with the Kings coronation. During this I transported personnel taking part in the parade to everywhere they needed to be ensuring that the day ran smoothly.

What has been the biggest challenge of your career so far?

The biggest challenge of my career so far was going through 10 weeks basic training. However, it was also the most rewarding as once completed you have a great sense of pride and accomplishment.

What sort of support network do you have at your company?

During my apprenticeship I have a tutor that I can ask about any queries. I also have a great network around me of people that I can gain advice from and who will support you through any issues.

What would be your words of advice to someone thinking about doing an apprenticeship?

My advice to anyone thinking about an apprenticeship in the RAF as a driver or any other trade would be it is definitely worth doing. Not only will you gain a qualification at the end, but you also get a career and the opportunity to experience some amazing things that you couldn't get anywhere else.
