Hello, I Am Josh

I decided to do an apprenticeship because I thought it would suit me a lot more than university, while still allowing me to pursue further studies in my desired field. I learn by employing a more hands on approach, and seeing how things are applied in the real world. Apprenticeships allow you to apply what you have learnt in the classroom directly into your work and vice versa.

As a maintenance technician within the BMW Group, we are essential for ensuring that the production of the Mini can continue. We are on hand to deal with any faults that may occur day and night. We also ensure that new machinery for future production systems is implemented.

The highlight of my career so far has been finding out about the complexity of a production facility that builds cars, and the huge amount of different machinery and equipment that is used to do so. I have always had an interest in cars, so I still find it fascinating how the Mini is manufactured.

The biggest challenge of my career so far has been dealing with the transition from school to the world of work. It is a very different atmosphere and takes a lot more self-resilience and motivation.

Within the BMW Group apprentices get a huge amount of support. We can contact our line managers or placement managers at any time. We could also receive support from the trade union or our training provider if necessary.

My advice to someone thinking about doing an apprenticeship would be to go to a few open days that employers hold. From there, you will be able to identify if an apprenticeship is the right path for you. If the employer does not commonly hold such open days do not be afraid to contact them directly as just starting one simple conversation could be the difference between you or someone else getting the place.
