    There is no set entry route to become a human resources assistant but it may be useful to do a relevant subject like a Level 3 Award in Human Resources Essentials, a Level 3 Certificate in Human Resources Practice or a Level 3 Diploma in Skills for Business Human Resources.


    Entry requirements for these courses vary. 

    Apprenticeship
    You can get into this role through a Level 3 (advanced) apprenticeship in HR support. This will typically take 18 to 24 months to complete.

    You'll usually need 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or the equivalent, including English and maths, for a Level 3 apprenticeship. 

    Work
    You could start as an office assistant or business administrator in a company's HR department, and work your way up through training and promotion. 

    Direct Application
    You could apply directly to work as a human resources assistant. You should have a good standard of general education, good computer skills and previous experience of office work. Employers may prefer you to have, or be willing to work towards, qualifications in human resource management. 

    Other Routes
    You can study for qualifications in human resources, either online or at a training centre, approved by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. 

    Professional and industry bodies
    You can join the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development for professional recognition, training opportunities and to make industry contacts.

    Human resources assistant apprenticeships - what you'll do

    Day-to-day tasks

    For day to day tasks, you could: 

    • answer enquiries 
    • maintain computerised staff records 
    • write documents like letters and reports 
    • update employee holiday and sickness records 
    • produce staff handbooks and newsletters 
    • record discussions during disciplinary procedures 
    • organise meetings and take minutes 
    • set up recruitment and training events
    Working environment
    You could work from home or in an office.
